International Clinical Trials Day Renews Focus on Representation in Medical Research
BIRMINGHAM, AL, May 20, 2026 — On International Clinical Trials Day, researchers and healthcare organizations are highlighting continuing disparities in clinical trial participation and renewed attention on whether medical studies reflect the populations most affected by disease.
Federal health agencies and researchers have increasingly emphasized the importance of broader representation in clinical trials to help researchers better understand how treatments perform across real-world populations.
Black Americans account for nearly 14% of the U.S. population but represent less than 2% of oncology clinical trial participants on average, according to published research. Hispanic and Latino Americans, who make up roughly 20% of the population, also remain underrepresented in many studies.
Birmingham-based Acclinate works with healthcare organizations, research institutions, and life sciences companies to improve representation in clinical trials through its NOWINCLUDED community platform, which connects underrepresented communities with health education and research opportunities.

"Clinical trial participation shapes the evidence doctors and patients rely on every day," said Tiffany Whitlow, co-founder of Acclinate. "When communities are missing from research, it leaves important questions about how treatments may work across populations."
Observed annually on May 20, International Clinical Trials Day recognizes the patients, researchers, and medical professionals who help advance medicine through clinical research. More on the issue of clinical trial generalizability and representation can be found here (https://www.acclinate.com/blog).
